The Ups and Downs of Digital Communites

Do different social networking sites offer different benefits and drawbacks?

Social networking sites and apps are always a double-edged blade. They offer room for some positivity as well as negativity. TikTok is one of the biggest sites right now with users worldwide. I have seen TikTok help bring exposure to those desperately in need and help small businesses. There are even whole accounts dedicated to helping the homeless, surprising people with money/gifts, and food review accounts that help bring countless customers to struggling restaurants (KiethLeeFoodReviews). However, TikTok can be a platform to express hate and prejudice. This is common information and can be seen on almost every social media platform. Another drawback to TikTok is its actual effect on our brains. It uses a unique algorithm to give us videos we would like to see. The problem with this is its stimulation and constant reinforcement of sometimes hurtful views. TikTok can increase our stress, anxiety, and even depression. How TikTok effects our Mental Health

Do social networking sites have any responsibility in promoting mental health in their users? If so, how might they go about doing so?
Yes, social media platforms should have a responsibility in promoting mental health, especially when things like bullying, hate, and negativity appear on their platform. They can help by efficiently monitoring and taking action on those topics.
